The New Carlsberg Foundation was established in 1902 by Carl and Ottilia Jacobsen as the culmination of their life long patronage of the arts.

The Foundation’s primary aim was to support the New Carlsberg Glyptotek, which houses the art collections that Carl and Ottilia donated to the Danish public. It also works to promote the wider study of art and art history, helping other museums to acquire works of art and providing public artworks for squares, gardens and buildings across Denmark.

As well as using his own money to fund the New Carlsberg Foundation, Carl Jacobsen gave his New Carlsberg Brewery to the Carlsberg Foundation.  This guaranteed his foundation would receive a guaranteed share of the brewery profits.

The New Carlsberg Foundation operates as an independent part of the Carlsberg Foundation, managed by a board of three Trustees representing different areas of the arts.
