Carlsberg has been enjoyed in Hong Kong since 1923 when it was first imported on an official basis. This made Carlsberg the country’s first imported quality beer and secured the brand’s long standing position as one of the most popular in Hong Kong.
The Carlsberg Hong Kong Brewery was established as a joint venture with the East Asiatic Company. It was inaugurated by the Danish Queen, HM Margrethe II, in 1981. Production was moved to the brewery in Huizhou in Southern China in 1999.
The Hong Kong beer market is one of the most competitive in the world with five companies controlling 70% of the approximately 1.5 million hl industry.
Despite a decline in the market, the total sales volume of Carlsberg Hong Kong has increased by 38% since 2003, driven by an aggressive expansion of its portfolio.
