Today the Carlsberg Research Center employs around 150 people working in a wide range of natural sciences to create and exploit new opportunities within the brewing, biotechnology and biomedical sectors.

It has three main departments:

• The Carlsberg Laboratory

The original laboratory, which returned to brewery ownership in 1972, now conducts research into biotechnological production processes and biomedical sciences.

• The Carlsberg Research Laboratory

Formed in 1972 from the merger of Carlsberg’s and Tuborg’s research facilities, this laboratory focuses on malting and brewing to provide information for the Carlsberg Breweries. Its activities include genetic, microbiological and biotechnological research into new methods of breeding barley and yeast.

• Business Development

This department is responsible for the commercialisation of the research from the Center, including setting up partnerships, developing business plans, obtaining funding and selling services externally.
