BEER BY-PRODUCTS AS ANIMAL FODDER

The need to eliminate waste management costs is a priority of Carlsberg’s across the globe. Finding a way to do this leads to benefits for the local community and ultimately to the environment in which we operate.

THE ADVANTAGE TO LOCAL FARMERS …

When beer is brewed, yeast, spent grains and nutrient rich earth remain as normal by- products of the process. Instead of dumping these products into the environment, we are able to sell them to local farmers. They use the yeast as healthy fodder for their pigs, the spent grains as cattle feed and the earth for cultivation and gardening.

…AND THEIR ANIMALS

As many as 20,000 Finnish cows enjoy fodder that has spent grains in it. Spent grains are known to improve the development of meat and milk in domestic cattle. The yeast fed to the pigs is also known for its healthy qualities, specifically as a natural antibiotic which helps fight infections. The farms we sell to are all close to our production unit so in addition to the clear economic advantages of the initiative, there is a sense of local community working together.

WORKING FOR THE FUTURE

The use of beer by-products as animal fodder in Finland has been operating successfully for many years. It is part of our global program to find ways of working together with the communities in which we operate. This cooperation can lead to advantages for all; including important reductions on the impact society has on the environment.
