In Malawi at the end of 2011, a shortage of foreign currencies made many things difficult in this East African country.

Helping the sick
One example was that medicines were not available, because the government could not pay the producers of medicines, and in turn not provide for members of the community who were ill.

To show its commitment to the country growth and the well-being of its people, Carlsberg Malawi decided to donate medicine worth USD 1.5 million.

“For Carlsberg Malawi, a better and healthier society means better business. Today’s donation is also about our consumer’s enjoyment of good health,” said Logistics Director James Katunga as he presented the medicine donation to the Ministry of Health representative.

To make this donation Carlsberg joined up with The Coca-Cola Medical Relief Initiative - a partnership between the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation and CitiHope International - a charity that works to prevent disease and promote health worldwide.

Helping the thirsty
Another example was a lack of soft and alcoholic drinks in the market. This has resulted in traders overpricing drinks by doubling the recommended retail price. Too few bottles is part of the reason why there is not enough drinks, which is why Carlsberg Malawi is now collecting glass to ensure the supply of bottles for drinks and to bring back down the retail price of soft and alcoholic drinks in Malawi.
