Co- treating plant and municipality waste water

The project included a three-year modernisation and capacity extension of the existing wastewater plant, owned and operated by Carlsberg Polska to handle wastewater from the Okocim brewery and municipality. The objective was to achieve an overall environmental impact reduction and adjust the waste water disposal for the brewery. The project was implemented in close cooperation with the local authorities as the waste water treatment plant also co-treats the municipal effluent.

The awarding chamber is a public institution established to promote environmental projects in the industry and municipal sector, under auspices of Ministry of Environment. The project was co-funded with a 0.9 milion EUR fund facility from the EU Regional Development Programme.

Adjusting to the fast growth

The Okocim brewery owns and operates its wastewater treatment plant since the 1960's. It used to treat both brewery and municipal effluent from Brzesko (20.000 inhabitants).

As the brewery expanded in the 2000's it was necessary to upgrade and extend the plant to match with increased load, comply with EU effluent standards as well as to control local nuisance.

The project implementation took three years and actions were divided over time in order to ensure treatment continuity. This was made possible due to the fact that the plant is equipped with two parallel treatment lines for high and low season. The investment resulted in the increase of reactor volumes, new control systems, replacement of aeration equipment, sludge dewatering and biogas burning. Upon project finalisation, the treatment plant reached the final capacity of 10.000m3/d and a removal efficiency of 21 tons COD/d.
