As part of the Penang state government's goal of becoming a green state, a no plastic bag on Monday rule has been instituted. Consumers will have to pay 20 cents for a plastic bag at check-out counters on Mondays.  The scheme, which began in July 2009, may be extended to more days of the week if it proves popular, and the money saved from the initiative has been donated to charity.

Convenient, eco-friendliness

In an expression of support for the initiative, Carlsberg Malaysia has created a non-commercial promotion in partnership with the Sunshine supermarket chain. All customers who purchase a carton containing 24 cans receive an eco friendly Carlsberg branded bag. The aim of the promotion is to demonstrate Carlsberg Malaysia's commitment towards reducing the use of plastic bags in Penang and indirectly contribute to the conservation of the environment. In addition, the promotion will add to the convenience of Carlsberg Malaysia's customers by providing a recyclable eco-friendly carry bag.

By encouraging the use of environmentally friendly bags, and supporting the state led initiative, Carlsberg Malaysia's promotion forms part of the Carlsberg Group's global environmental strategy.

At Carlsberg, we are continuously striving to minimise adverse effects on the environment, and optimise the use of natural resources. The environment is one of the Group's key CSR focus areas, and the scheme also reflects the Group's broader aim of being engaged with society
