ENGINEERING A BETTER FUTURE

The efficient use of energy resources has long been a priority for the Carlsberg Group as it shows by this alternative energy initiative implemented by Baltika Breweries, which was published across the Russian media from April through to October 2008.

REDUCING IMPACT

The initiative concerned the use of biogas as an alternative source of energy, specifically as fuel for the boiler house at our Khabarovsk brewery. The result was an immediate reduction in the cost of heat energy production and, more critically, an overall reduction on the impact the standard process has on the environment. In Russia, this had never been done before.

The reality is that implementing programs that reduce harmful effects on the environment are not so easy to execute in countries that have restricted access to innovative environmental solutions. In a heavily industrialized nation as vast and diverse as Russia, the task can be particularly difficult. We were determined to invest not only in improving its efficiency - the project can save up to 250 tons of standard fuel per year - but also in protecting the environment in which we operate.

WORKING WITH CLEANER FUEL

The program required substantial investment and know how. In 2006, engineers and specialist began research on the use of biogas and the development of this unique technology. By 2007, the replacement of the burner, a necessary step towards the use of biogas as fuel, took place and by April 2008 the project was launched for industrial operation.

Technically, the project was seen as unique because of its capability to operate with more types of fuel than a standard burner. In this case, black oil, diesel, natural gas and biogas. A further plus was its ability to operate with a combination of standard fuel and biogas.

“No other industrial enterprise in the country has anything like this” the regional Minister for Food, Sergei Lopatin Industry told the press.

The success of the Khabarovsk brewery project and of other initiatives powered by Carlsberg Group’s CSR policies, all form part of our commitment towards a cleaner and better future.
