In the UK, Carlsberg’s primary distribution fleet travels around 13,000,000 km per annum. The need to ensure that our fleet is operating efficiently in terms of environmental considerations is a top priority now and for the future. Together with our partners Gist Ltd, we’ve now introduced SAFED in 2009
Working together with the department of transport
SAFED is a good practice guide introduced by the Department of Transport with the philosophy that small changes can make a big difference. It identifies and remedies the safety and environmental challenges that surround the running of a large fleet of goods vehicles. At the same time, it safeguards the service levels our customers expect.
Local SAFED training programs have now taken place throughout our depots. Combined with drivers´ feedback on ideas to improve safety and reduce environmental impact, the initiative has led to a 2.7% improvement in fuel efficiency. Further trials in partnership with the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) have resulted in a 4.46% improvement in fuel economy.
To date, the measures introduced have included
- Speed restriction on vehicles
- Introduction of aero dynamic skirts and hoods
- Fuel additives to reduce wear on engine
- Sourcing of efficient replacement parts such as brake pads and tires
New research for the future
We are also working on new innovations that we hope will lead to even greater improvements in the increased efficiency of our fleet and currently these involve the introduction of tear drop aerodynamic trailers, more efficient engine injection (LPG) and the use of electric vehicles.
Carlsberg initiatives to reduce impact on the environment through better working practices form part of our worldwide environmental strategy.
