PREVENTING THE SALE OF ALCOHOL TO MINORS
Since 2003, Carlsberg Polska has collaborated with the Polish Brewing Union (ZPPP) and the State Agency for Prevention of Alcohol Relate Problems (PARPA) with a campaign to prevent the sale of alcohol to minors.
In 2007, the initiative was further reinforced by a firm commitment on behalf of the Polish Brewing Industry at the European Alcohol and Health Forum that it will take firm action to curb sales of alcohol to minors.
REACTING TO UNDERAGE DRINKING
The initiative started by educating sellers and Polish adults about the laws prohibiting sales to minors. By 2007, the campaign had evolved into a direct appeal to the community – and potential witnesses of sales to minors – not to remain indifferent , but to react when they find themselves in that situation. Alcohol retailers in stores, restaurants and pubs, the brewing industry itself and media and public opinion leaders have also been targeted.
THE IMPACT OF THE CAMPAIGN
The ´Don’t Condone Alcohol Sales to Minors` has had a major impact across Poland. Nearly 70% of those polled in a representative sample of Polish adults had encountered the campaign which ran on national television, in the press and at retail points of sale.
By 2008, Polish Television was running public service episodes which showed real life situations in which minors attempted to buy alcohol at different locations across the country. Retailers and members of the public who were present were then questioned on their response to the situation, and how they reacted to it. Using this material, the Polish Brewing Union will now introduce further training for retailers and a new advertising campaign for the public.
Carlsberg Group is actively involved in campaigns and initiatives that tackle the problem of underage drinking. This policy forms a fundamental part of our CSR strategy wherever we operate.
