| Danish barley and Tasmanian hops are the ingredients in a new and different beer, Carlsberg Crown to be sold on the Danish market from March 29.
The beer celebrates the marriage between His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Tasmanian Mary Donaldson in Denmark on May 14. Carlsberg Crown is an elegant and light special brew, with an alcohol percentage by volume of 6.5%. |
Carlsberg Crown is brewed with Danish pilsner malt, from barley grown by Prince Frederik's brother, Prince Joachim, and hops from Tasmania.
The mild hops add a floral aroma and a pleasant aftertaste to the beer. The hops come from a remote region in Tasmania, where they have been grown since the first Europeans settled in the early 1800s.
A tradition for royal brewing
Since 1932 Carlsberg has brewed special beers in connection with royal events. These special beers, however, were only used as presents to business associates and in the export markets: in 1932 when the Prince of Wales visited Carlsberg, in 1934 when the Siamese royal couple visited Denmark, in connection with King George VI's coronation in 1937, for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953 and finally in 1957, when Queen Elizabeth visited Denmark.
Carlsberg Crown will only be sold in Denmark for a limited period in connection with the royal wedding on May 14.
Brewing facts
The combination of pilsner malt and brewing syrup gives the beer a light colour and flavour. The beer's sparkling texture is due to extra added carbon dioxide, which also accentuates the scent of hop. Carlsberg Crown is very suitable as an aperitif or for light dishes.
Carlsberg was the first Danish brewery to be awarded a Royal Warrant in 1904.
