First heavy duty electric trucks

In 2019, we entered into an agreement with Renault Trucks to make important steps in the transformation of urban transport. Renault report that this is their first contract on this scale in Europe, demonstrating that electric trucks are a commercial and operational reality.

It was the result of investigations into alternatives to diesel for our fleets of trucks, to cut the carbon emissions of delivering our beer.

The comprehensive trial in our Swiss depots highlighted specific features we needed to optimise sustainable beer delivery. As a result, 20 fully electric heavy-duty trucks will be deployed in Switzerland in 2020 at our Feldschlösschen brewery, servicing 15 logistical sites. The Renault Trucks D Wide Z.E. will make daily delivery rounds of 100 to 200 km from 15 logistical sites in the area around Feldschlösschen brewery. This is also supplemented by the use of railway lines.

The trucks will be recharged at our breweries using 100% renewable electricity and across Feldschlösschen's network using renewable energy.

Rethinking packaging with the Green Fibre Bottle

Reducing our beer-in-hand carbon footprint means innovating across our packaging portfolio. And innovations are best achieved in partnership with other experts. The paper bottle company, Paboco, is helping us achieve breakthroughs in our Green Fibre Bottle project, developing the world’s first 100% bio-based beer bottle made from sustainably sourced wood fibres.

Going for 1.5˚C

Going for 1.5˚C

It’s been a big year for 1.5°C. At this critical time for the planet, media coverage has been unprecedented and there was an affirmed commitment at COP25. Our sustainability ambitions at Carlsberg are aligned to the most ambitious science-based target of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, going beyond the Paris Agreement’s base level.
