Carlsberg launches glass bottles with up to 90% lower carbon impact

A partnership with glass bottle supplier, Encirc, could take us a step closer towards a ZERO Carbon Footprint, with a trial demonstrating the possibility to cut the carbon impact of glass bottles by up to 90%.

The trial, which created 1 million lower-carbon Carlsberg bottles, used 100% biofuel and increased recycled content up to 100%, while maintaining quality.

Glass bottles account for around 10% of the total value chain carbon emissions for Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company in the UK. By demonstrating the possibility to cut the footprint of each bottle by up to 90%, this trial has huge potential to support our target to cut emissions across our value chain as part of our Together Towards ZERO and Beyond programme. And it could even transform the one-way glass bottle from the highest-carbon-impact packaging type to the lowest.

Rethinking packaging with the Fibre Bottle

Rethinking packaging with the Fibre Bottle

Reducing our beer-in-hand carbon footprint means innovating across our packaging portfolio. And innovations are best achieved in partnership with other experts. The paper bottle company, Paboco, is helping us achieve breakthroughs in our Fibre Bottle project, developing the world’s first 100% bio-based beer bottle made from sustainably sourced wood fibres.
